About Miscanthus

Culture of Miscanthus is a very ecological and economical crop:

  • After the first year, usually it doesn’t need any treatment or care of the land
  • You don’t have annual costs for seeds / rhizomes and for processing of land for 20-25 years
  • Miscanthus is a perennial plant with a high potential for use in energy production
  • Non-invasive, does not produce seeds
  • Roots can reach up to 6m deep to find water
  • Land planted with Miscanthus can be easily rendered to any other types of cultures
  • Can be planted in some soils less suitable for other crops
  • High efficiency
  • Excellent for carbon capture and soil regeneration / stabilization
  • Estimated production - on average 20 tons per hectare
  • Reducing carbon emissions - potential income generation through green certificates
  • Miscanthus grows without fertilizers (all the leaves fall in winter and acts as a natural fertilizer)
  • Miscanthus is sharp and is not comestible
  • Miscanthus can be grown on polluted soils without extracting toxic elements from the soil
  • Miscanthus can be used as a curtain of protection:
    • around deposits of garbage and toxic waste,
    • on the road to protect from snow blizzard
    • for seed crops.
  • Harvesting is simple, with a harvester or balers
  • Collected materials can be stored easily without the need to be dry.

Miscanthus energy plant is classified as C4 plants, very strong and perennial, originating in Asia. Being a grass plant sterile, is multiplied just vegetative, by rhizomes and Arge Miscanthus provides quality rhizomes, imported from Austria.
Miscanthus is planted in the spring and once planted can remain in soil for at least twenty to twenty-five years. In the first year after planting, is not harvested, it has no efficiency from the economical point of view and is left on the ground.
The following spring, Miscanthus grows, the leaves fall again in the fall / winter, providing nutrients for the soil and a natural herbicide; Miscanthus is harvested in the early spring. This cycle is repeated every year.

• 1 cubic meter Miscanthus pellets or briquettes = approx 650 kg

What is the initial investment?

Example of calculation for an investment in Miscanthus Briquettes for 1 ha

  • Culture establishment costs are around 2400 euros / ha, of which:
  • 2150 Euro / ha rhizomes price including transport to the location, technical advice and provision of special planting machine;
  • 250 Euro / ha – costs of agricultural work (plowing, discing, herbicide)
  • Estimated Production on 25 years is dry 450t/material (20t dry material / ha / year from the third year; in the first year is not harvested, in the second year will be about 12t/material dry / ha) .
  • For 25 years we will have 24 years of harvesting costs: 24 x 50 = 1200 EURO.
  • In the second year harvests approximately 12.5 t / dry material; in the third year to year 25, will produce up to 20t/material dry / ha - 22x20 = 440t + 12.5 t = 452.5 t / dry material.

Investing in rhizomes and establishment of culture is about 2400 Euro / ha, as shown above, we add the EURO 1200 harvesting for 24 years.

So, we have the total cost of 3.600 euros per hectare: 3,600 EURO/452, 5t / dry material = 7.95 EURO / t / dry material Miscanthus -production cost, if we make briquettes will be additional costs of 20 EUR /t.

There are other costs such as storage (130kg/mc dry material as harvested, 650kg/mc Miscanthus briquettes), and market distribution.
